US soldiers hurt in Iraq attack

USA flagA number of US soldiers have been wounded and an Iraqi interpreter has been killed after coming under fire from police in Iraq, reports say.

The shooting took place at 1500 (1200 GMT) at a checkpoint at a bridge in the centre of the northern city of Mosul.

Two policemen opened fire, although there are conflicting reports as to the identity and numbers of casualties.

Five detained for deadly Cairo attack

EgyptSecurity officials said Monday that they had detained three men and two women a day after an explosion killed a 17-year-old French tourist in Cairo and wounded at least 20 other people.

The explosion, in crowded Hussein Square, a main tourist stop, sent hundreds scrambling for cover just before nightfall on Sunday.

Pakistani Taliban declare indefinite truce in Swat

TalibanTaleban insurgents in the troubled north-western Swat valley of Pakistan have announced an indefinite ceasefire.

The announcement follows a deal struck last week between a radical cleric and authorities that brings Sharia law in return for an end to the insurgency.

Three U.S. soldiers killed in Iraq

USA flagThree US soldiers and an interpreter have been killed in fighting in eastern Iraq, the US military says.

It says the four were killed during combat operations in the volatile Diyala province, north of Baghdad, without giving any further details.
