Sri Lanka wounded evacuated

ICRC The International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) says it has evacuated a further 160 sick and wounded people trapped by fighting in north Sri Lanka.

An ICRC spokeswoman told the BBC that a vessel was on its way to Trincomalee after collecting civilian patients from the coastal village of Putumattalan.

Pakistan arrests Mumbai attack plotters

Pakistan flagThe Pakistani government said on Thursday for the first time that last November’s attack on Mumbai was launched and partly planned from Pakistan, and it was holding in custody a ringleader and five other suspects.

“Some part of the conspiracy has taken place in Pakistan,” Rehman Malik, adviser to the prime minister on the interior, told a news conference remarkable for the extent to which it acknowledged Pakistani involvement.

Bomb kills eight Iraqi Shiite pilgrims

Iraq bomb blastA roadside bomb killed eight Iraqi pilgrims and wounded 46 near a revered shrine on Thursday as Iraqi Shi’ites marked Arbain, one of the most important dates in the Shi’ite religious calendar, police said.

Police said the blast took place less than 1 km (half a mile) from the Imam Hussein shrine in central Kerbala, 80 km (50 miles) southwest of Baghdad, despite intense security.

UNSC to meet Africans, Arabs on Sudan’s Bashir

UN flagAfrican Union and Arab League diplomats urged the U.N. Security Council on Thursday to suspend an expected war crimes indictment of the Sudanese president over atrocities in Darfur, diplomats said.

U.N. diplomats and officials said on Wednesday the International Criminal Court had decided to issue an arrest warrant for President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, who is accused by the court’s chief prosecutor of overseeing genocide in Darfur.

Afghans investigate Pakistan link to Kabul attacks

Afghanistan flagAfghan intelligence agents said Thursday they are investigating links between Pakistan and Taliban militants who killed 26 people in three simultaneous suicide bomb and gun raids on state offices in the capital Kabul.

The three coordinated raids on two ministries and a prisons department office Wednesday show a new tactic by the Taliban, who have previously only attacked one target at a time.

Pakistan admits Mumbai 26/11 attack

Pakistan flagA senior Pakistani official has admitted for the first time that last year’s attacks in the Indian city of Mumbai were partly planned in Pakistan.

Interior Ministry chief Rehman Malik said that a number of suspects from the banned Lashkar-e-Taiba militant group had been held and may be prosecuted.
