Cambodia Khmer Rouge trial opens

Cambodia flagA former member of Cambodia’s genocidal Khmer Rouge regime became the first from the ultra-Maoist movement to stand trial before a U.N.-backed tribunal Tuesday.

Kaing Guek Eav, known as Duch, faces charges that include crimes against humanity and grave breaches of the 1949 Geneva Convention during the regime’s 1975-79 rule.

Israel engaged in covert war inside Iran

Israeli flagIsrael is involved in a covert war of sabotage inside Iran to try to delay Tehran’s alleged attempts to develop a nuclear weapon, a British newspaper said on Tuesday, quoting a former CIA agent and intelligence experts.

An intelligence source in the Middle East told Reuters last year Israel planned to target Iranian nuclear scientists with letter bombs and poisoned packages and had set off explosions in Iran. Analysts offered similar accounts and said such tactics would be credible, but no confirmation has been available.

LTTE ready for ceasefire

LTTETamil Tigers are ready for ceasefire if the Sri Lankan government is willing to halt its military offensive against them, a pro-LTTE political party said on Tuesday.

“We have been told by the LTTE that they are willing to accept a ceasefire if the government ends the offensive against them and will hold talks on the Tamil issue”, a senior member of the pro-LTTE Tamil National Alliancev (TNA) Nallathamby Srikantha told reporters here.

Sudan, Darfur rebels sign a deal

Sudan flagSudan’s government and a leading Darfur rebel faction agreed on Tuesday to meet for peace talks, signing a deal with concessions from both sides, and the Qatari mediator urged all other rebels and Chad to come to the table.

Tuesday’s agreement included measures to aid and protect refugees in Darfur and a commitment by the two sides to continue negotiations in Doha. The Justice and Equality Movement (JEM) also wants a prisoner swap.

US missile strikes hit Pakistan

DronesAt least 18 people are reported dead in a suspected US drone attack near the Afghan border in north-west Pakistan.

Two missiles fired by the drone struck the home of a local tribesman in the Kurram tribal region, officials say.
