US soldiers hurt in Iraq attack

USA flagA number of US soldiers have been wounded and an Iraqi interpreter has been killed after coming under fire from police in Iraq, reports say.

The shooting took place at 1500 (1200 GMT) at a checkpoint at a bridge in the centre of the northern city of Mosul.

Two policemen opened fire, although there are conflicting reports as to the identity and numbers of casualties.

The US military says the wounded soldiers have been taken to hospital and an investigation is under way.

Initial reports from Iraqi sources said up to six US troops had been killed, although the US military said an unspecified number were injured.

The attackers are reported to have fled the scene.

The BBC’s Mike Sergeant in Baghdad says the shooting is not the first such incident, but would be the most serious of its kind for some time.

It comes a day after three US soldiers and an interpreter were killed in fighting in the volatile Diyala province, north of Baghdad.

The incidents follow a recent decline in violence in Iraq, from where US President Barack Obama has vowed to withdraw US troops within 16 months of his taking office.
