Poland cancels Pakistan senators visit

Poland flagPoland’s senate on Tuesday called off a visit by Pakistani senators after their country’s negotiators failed to save Polish hostage Piotr Stanczak from execution by his Taliban captors.

The delegation, led by president of Pakistan’s senate Mohammedmian Soomro had been due to visit Warsaw from Feb. 12 to 14, according to a statement by the Polish senate.

Nato soldiers killed in Afghan attack

NATO Nato says two of its soldiers have been killed in a bomb attack in Khost province in eastern Afghanistan.

The organisation did not immediately release the nationalities of those killed. Most of those serving in the area are American.

Nato said one soldier was also hurt when an improvised explosive device struck a convoy on a road between Khost town and the main regional US base.

Obama’s new world order and Israel

Barack ObamaAs we go to the polls today, the world around us is quickly changing in new and distressing ways. The challenges the international system will present the government we elect will be harsher, more complicated and more dangerous than the ones its predecessors have faced.

Bluntly stated, the world that will challenge the next government will be one characterized by the end of US global predominance. In just a few short weeks, the new administration of President Barack Obama has managed to weaken the perception of American power and embolden US adversaries throughout the world.

ICRC rescues Sri Lanka civilians

Sri Lanka Tamil childrenThe International Committee of the Red Cross is evacuating 400 sick and wounded civilians who had been trapped by fighting in north-east Sri Lanka.

An ICRC spokeswoman told the BBC the evacuees would be taken by ferry to the city of Trincomalee for treatment.

Most people in the West assumed that the Islamic revolution would collapse fast.

No victors in Gaza war

Israeli troopsAs the fighting finally ceased Ismail Haniyeh, Hamas’s Gazan leader, broadcast a message congratulating the Palestinian people on their “great victory”.

Outside, those Palestinians were savouring that “victory”. In neighbourhoods pulverised beyond recognition, hungry, traumatised and distraught they picked with bare hands through the rubble of their homes, searching for the decomposing corpses of relatives.
