Taliban wins as Islamic law imposed

TalibanPakistan is to impose Islamic law in a vast region of the north-west called Malakand in an attempt to placate extremists, even as President Asif Zardari warns that they are “trying to take over the state”.

Pakistani Taliban militants who are in control of the Swat valley in the region announced a ceasefire tonight, reacting to the government’s agreement to bring in sharia courts.

LTTE target tamil civilians

Sri Lanka Tamil childrenThe United Nations says it has received reports that Tamil Tiger rebels are actively preventing civilians from leaving Sri Lanka’s war zone.

It says a growing number of those trying to leave have been shot at and some have been killed.

Israel bombs tunnels after rocket attack

Israeli Air ForceThe Israeli Air Force on Monday afternoon bombed a smuggling tunnel located under the Philadelphi Corridor, on the border between the Gaza Strip and Egypt.

The IDF said the aircraft identified a hit on the tunnel. Palestinian sources said the site was east of the Rafah border crossing. According to a Palestinian report, the attack was the first in the said area since the conclusion of Operation Cast Lead.

Swat Militants call ceasefire in Pakistan

Pakistan flagIslamist fighters announced a 10-day ceasefire from Sunday in Pakistan’s northwestern Swat valley, where talks were under way that could restore Islamic sharia as the main system of law in the region.

Militants seeking to impose a harsh form of Islamic law began fighting security forces in Swat in late 2007 and now control the scenic valley, which was until recently one of Pakistan’s most popular tourist destinations.

U.N. human rights envoy visits Myanmar

Myanmar flagA United Nations human rights envoy toured eastern Myanmar bordering Thailand on Sunday to assess the human rights conditions of ethnic groups in the southeast Asian country, a government source said.

Tomas Ojea Quintana, U.N. Special Human Rights Rapporteur for Myanmar, visited eastern Kayin State on the first leg of a fact finding tour he hoped would include meeting detained opposition leader Aung Sang Suu Kyi.
