Four soldiers killed in Iraq

Iraq bomb blastA suicide car bomb has killed four American soldiers and an interpreter in the northern Iraqi city of Mosul, the US military says.

Three soldiers were killed when the car detonated near their vehicle, while the other two people died later from injuries, an official said.

Iran and the Future of Afghanistan

Afghanistan flagIn crafting a new approach to the war in Afghanistan, U.S. military and political leaders say Iran-once dubbed a member of the “axis of evil” by former President George W. Bush-could play a key role. Despite ongoing concerns over Iran’s nuclear program and allegations of arming militants in the region, Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of U.S. forces in the region, says Washington and Iran could coalesce around stabilizing Afghanistan.

Out of the Ruins of Gaza

Palestinian childrenDuring the war the Israeli army killed around 1,300 Palestinians – armed men, civilians and hundreds of children. They destroyed acres of homes and businesses.

If the damage had no justifiable and proportionate military purpose then it is classified as wanton destruction, which is a breach of the laws of war. What it also does is ratchet up the level of hatred for Israel because each pile of rubble was somebody’s home or somebody’s business.

Israel kills Gaza militant

Israeli troops IIIsraeli fire killed a Palestinian militant who was on a mission on Monday to attack an Israeli patrol along the border with the Hamas-ruled Gaza Strip, the Islamic Jihad group said.

Israel’s military, revising an earlier statement, said its forces killed a gunman who tried to infiltrate through its Gaza border fence.

LTTE suicide blast kills 28

LTTEA female Tamil Tiger suicide bomber mixed with a group of civilians fleeing Sri Lanka’s war zone blew herself up on Monday, killing an unknown number of people and wounding 60, the military said.

The blast happened at Vishvamadu, a town in the north of the Indian Ocean island recently captured by the military as it battles to crush the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) separatists and end a 25-year-old war.
