Russia to help U.S. deliver cargo to Afghanistan

Russian flag Russia will assist the U.S. in the transit of non-military cargo to Afghanistan, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said Friday.

Lavrov said on Russian television that his country intends to cooperate to help get vital cargo to NATO troops in Afghanistan.

UNRWA suspends humanitarian aid in Gaza

UN flagThe United Nations Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) on Friday said it is suspending humanitarian aid in Gaza until further notice, after Hamas seized control of its warehouses and stole 200 tons of food and supplies.

The agency said it made the decision after Hamas personnel seized an aid shipment on Thursday. Earlier this week, Hamas police took thousands of blankets and food parcels meant for needy residents.

Sri Lanka army closes on LTTE

Sri Lanka armyThe Sri Lankan government has accused the Red Cross of inciting panic over the military operation against Tamil Tiger rebels in the north.

A spokesman said the ICRC had ordered 35,000 body bags for the battle zone to create what he called a fear psychosis among the international community.

The International Committee of the Red Cross confirmed a routine order of body bags but nowhere near that number.

Israel expels Gaza aid ship team

Israeli flagIsrael has expelled activists and journalists on a Lebanese ship carrying aid for Gaza, who were held on Thursday after Israel’s navy seized the ship.

Israeli forces beat and kicked some those on board, said an al-Jazeera reporter on the ship, although Israel said no “acts of violence” occurred.

Israel also denied claims its gunboats had fired on the ship, the latest to try to break the blockade on Gaza.

Pakistan nuclear scientist released

Abdul Qadeer Khan (Pakistan)A court in Pakistan has freed disgraced nuclear scientist Abdul Qadeer Khan from house arrest.

Dr Khan, who has been under tight restrictions since 2004, can now leave home and receive visitors.

Dr Khan welcomed the ruling and said he was not bothered what the international community thought of his release.

Kyrgyzstan close of US base final

Kyrgyzstan flagKyrgyzstan says its decision to close a US base that serves as a vital supply route for US and Nato operations in Afghanistan is “final”.

It contradicts US statements that talks are ongoing about the base’s future.

Meanwhile, the US has asked to move supplies through Russia, and Tajikistan has said it will allow the transit of non-military goods into Afghanistan.
