Islamists kill nine in Algeria

Algeria flagNine members of a private security firm were killed when Islamist militants attacked their base near Jijel in northeastern Algeria, residents and local journalists said on Monday.

Three other guards were wounded in the attack on the building used by private security company Spas on Sunday evening in the town of Ziama Mansouriah, around 360 kilometres (225 miles) east of the capital Algiers, they said.

Aid workers shot dead in Darfur

Sudan flagTwo Sudanese men working for a French aid group in Darfur have been shot dead in an ambush, says the United Nations.

It happened in South Darfur on Saturday evening in an area of heavy fighting between government troops and rebels.

Suicide bomb kill Somalia peacekeepers

SomaliaThe African Union responded angrily and defiantly to the killing of at least 11 Burundian soldiers in an apparent suicide bomb attack Sunday in Somalia’s capital, Mogadishu.

The 11 soldiers were on a peacekeeping mission for the African Union. The attack also seriously injured 15 people.

U.S. weapons used against civilians in Gaza war

Israel palestine flagIsrael and Hamas used foreign-supplied weapons to attack civilians according to fresh evidence released by Amnesty International.

Munitions from the USA, Israel’s main foreign arms supplier, were used by Israel forces during three-week conflict in Gaza and southern Israel. Hamas and other Palestinian armed groups fired hundreds of rockets that had been smuggled in or made of components from abroad at civilian areas in Israel.

Congo, Somalia conflicts make 350,000 refugees

African RefugeesEnduring conflicts in east and central Africa have produced some 350,000 new refugees since October, worsening an already dire humanitarian situation, aid agencies say.

The region already hosts the continent’s biggest number of refugees, but conflicts in Democratic Republic of Congo and Somalia are forcing many more from their homes.

Basque socialists’ offices bombed

Spain flagA bomb has exploded outside the local headquarters of the Basque Socialist Party in the Basque town of Lazkao.

The blast followed a telephone warning claiming to be from the Basque separatist group, Eta, police said. It caused some damage but no-one was hurt.

LTTE confirms ceasefire offer

LTTETamil Tiger rebels told the U.N. and international community on Monday that they are willing to accept a ceasefire with the Sri Lankan government, as Asia’s longest-running civil war may be nearing an end.

But the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) rejected calls to lay down arms and surrender, saying keeping their weapons is necessary to ensure survival for the ethnic minority Tamil people in the Indian Ocean island nation.
