Israeli soldiers secret weapon: Jewish spirituality

Israeli defense forcesTwo soldiers made their way through the winding streets of Gaza City, carefully watching for booby traps. Their objective was to hunt down Hamas terrorists and locate caches of Kassam and Grad rockets and other arms.

As they deliberated whether to turn left or right at an intersection, a woman dressed from head to foot in black appeared from out of nowhere.

“Go this way,” she said, pointing to the right. For some reason, the two soldiers listened to her.

After proceeding for a few seconds, the pair heard a large explosion behind them, in the direction they had almost taken. A rigged house blew up, destroying everything in the vicinity.

The two soldiers asked the woman dressed in black who she was.

“I am the Matriarch Rachel,” she said, referring to the beloved wife of Jacob.

This story, whether true or not, is being circulated in religious circles – via Internet forums, SMS, e-mail and word of mouth – and is fast becoming an urban legend.

There is a tendency among the faithful to introduce metaphysical dimensions to the fighting in Gaza. Two-and-a-half weeks into Operation Cast Lead, religious faith has been integral to many soldiers’ morale.

“We are being swamped with demands, from religious and secular, kibbutzniks and yeshiva students, Sephardim and Ashkenazim,” for the names of soldiers to pray for, said Rabbanit Grossman, director of the Jewish Information Center in the capital’s Mea She’arim neighborhood. The haredi organization has created a special “prayer hotline” for soldiers.

The initiative, backed by the Bostoner rebbe, Rabbi Levi Yitzhak Horovitz, and Rehovot Chief Rabbi Simcha Hakohen Kook, pairs a soldier involved in the Gaza fighting with a supplicant who prays for that soldier’s health and welfare.

Only soldiers who are interested in the service – or whose family members or friends are interested – are being singled out for this special spiritual protection from Hamas terrorists.

Can Muslims coexist instead of inventing “resistance”

One cannot but wonder, watching the demise of Hamas, if the outcome of this war is more of a lesson for Arabs or Israelis. What experiences can we draw from a war against a supposed enemy whose power and knowledge are incontestably superior to ours? Not many if the Assad regime, responsible for the havoc over the last 40 years, remains in power.

Bookmark and Share

The real opportunity of this war is that it may spark an Arab Renaissance if, and only if, the Assad regime is removed and replaced by Syrians intent on building a nation instead of destroying other countries, by moderate Muslims ready to crush extremists instead of amplifying their miserable existence, and by Arabs able to embrace nationalism in order to engineer coexistence instead of inventing “resistance.”

Assad and the Ba’ath Party will sacrifice every Palestinian, Syrian, Israeli, Lebanese, and Iraqi soul to stay in power, much like Iraq’s Hussein did until brought down by force. For those of us who know the regime intimately, terror is its tool of choice and it houses terrorists just as Hollywood houses celebrities.

While Hamas commits Hamacide, a term my son Samer recently coined to define the group’s self-destruction, Hizbullah is watching the events unfold with fear pounding the temples of its leadership and knowing full well that they must re-invent themselves for the next round of hostilities. Testing Iran’s military field tactics or Assad’s guerrilla warfare, and using the undeniably stupid leadership of Hamas, are but a distraction dwarfing the nuclear ambitions both Syria and Iran are racing towards.

Where is the West’s “Task Force” developing surgical knowhow to eradicate both regimes? For those wishful thinkers who believe in a dialogue with Assad, be aware that Hamas, Hizbullah, Fatah al-Islam, and many other terror groups are critical balance sheet entries without which Assad is bankrupt and his actions ultimately inconsequential.

Hamas’ take on the Gaza war? Watch it on YouTube

YoutubeHamas has set up a YouTube site showing graphic scenes from the fighting against Israel over the past few days. The militant group also attacks its political rival, Fatah.

The site, which can also be reached through a link on the Hamas Web site, contains a number of channels with various categories of clips.

Bookmark and Share

One called “nationalist songs” praises suicide bombings against the backdrop of an old terror attack in Tel Aviv. A caption states that 17 Israelis were killed.

The site, http://www.palutube.com, can be accessed in Hebrew and several other languages, but the names of the clips are in English.

Some of the footage shows graphic bloodshed, similar to those being shown on Arabic television channels.

The most popular clip under the category “resistance factions” was posted on Sunday and has been viewed nearly 3,000 times. It showcases a group of Hamas fighters conducting military exercises and firing various weapons.

Other clips show the military wing of Islamic Jihad, Hamas leader Nizar Ghayan who was killed when his house was bombed over a week ago, and the confession of a man supposedly working for the Shin Bet security service.

The clips also deal with Hamas’ political adversaries in Fatah, under the slogan “No to Abbas continuing in office.” Texts include “What is Abbas’ platform?” followed by “No to military intifada,” “No to foolish rockets,” and “No to humiliating attacks.”

The text is accompanied by a dramatic voice-over and scenes of weapons and Palestinian terror operatives over a disparaging photograph of Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas.

Rockets continue to hit Israel

Hamas launching qassam rocketsPalestinian terrorists continued to attack Israeli civilian areas on Wednesday, firing 16 projectiles by late afternoon, including a phosphorous mortar shell that hit the Eshkol region.

In the latest attack, a Kassam hit an open area near a kibbutz in the Sdot Negev region. Earlier, two Grad rockets hit the Shfela region, in the central district, while Ashdod, Ashkelon, Sderot and Beersheba were also hit. No one was wounded and no damage was reported in the attacks.

Although dozens of Grad-type rockets have plagued the cities during the conflict, defense officials have said that the Islamic group was nearing the end of its supply.

In general, there has been a marked drop in rocket attacks as the following graph shows:

Beersheba and the Shfela region are two of the farthest points that Hamas has succeeded in hitting since the start of Operation Cast Lead, nearly two and a half weeks ago.

Also on Wednesday, rockets fired in the direction of Jerusalem caused confusion when they set off air-raid sirens throughout the city.

Police spokesman Shmuel Ben-Ruby said that there were no incidents reported as a result of the sirens.

The rockets landed far-short of their intended target.

Hamas accepts Egyptian proposal for Gaza cease-fire

Ismail Haniyeh (Hamas)Hamas has accepted the Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire with Israel, the group said Wednesday evening, after talks in Cairo

The Hamas delegation was making it way back to Damascus to brief the group’s leaders.

Egyptian officials told the Middle East News Agency (MENA) that Hamas had responded positively to the country’s efforts to mediate a Gaza cease-fire.

Egyptian Foreign Minister Ahmed Aboul Gheit said he would relay Hamas’s response to the Egyptian proposal to Israel.

However, Osama Hamdan, the Hamas representative in Lebanon, said that Hamas’s position regarding the Egyptian initiative had not changed. He said that despite reports that Hamas had agreed to the cease-fire initiative, there were still a number of differences between Egypt and the Islamist movement that needed to be addressed.

Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Ehud Barak and Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni were meeting in Jerusalem to discuss Israel’s response to the initiative.

Also on Wednesday, France’s foreign minister said his government was ready to talk to Hamas, if the group renounced violence and recognize Israel.

France currently only has indirect contacts with Hamas, which the European Union lists as a terrorist group.

Speaking Wednesday in parliament, he said: “We don’t ignore the reality of Hamas, its electoral success or its weight in Palestinian opinion.”

He expressed hope that international pressure for a Gaza cease-fire will be “effective in a few days.”

Rockets From Lebanon Hit Israel

Hamas launching qassam rocketsPolice said the rockets landed in open areas and there were no reports of damage or injuries.

It is the second time rockets have been fired from Lebanon since heavy fighting between Israel and Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza began.

Lebanese officials said the Israeli army fired shells into southern Lebanon in retaliation.

The Israeli military continued airstrikes and ground assaults overnight throughout Gaza, claiming to have hit 60 targets, including a police headquarters and 30 more tunnels.

Meanwhile, UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was in the Middle East to call on leaders for an immediate ceasefire between Israel and Hamas.

He was to meet Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak in Cairo to encourage a diplomatic resolution to the conflict.

Ban will later head to Jordan, Israel, the Palestinian-controlled West Bank, Turkey, Lebanon, Syria and Kuwait, where he said an Arab League economic summit is likely to hold an extra session on the Gaza crisis.

His itinerary does not include a stop in Gaza because of the conflict.

As the assault against Hamas militants entered its 19th day, the number of Palestinian dead rose to 971, according to Gaza’s Health Ministry, including some 400 women and children.

Israel says 10 Israeli soldiers and three civilians hit by Hamas rockets fired across the border have been killed.

Gaza violence has ‘devastating’ effect on children

Palestinian childrenThe United Nations Committee on the Rights of the Child issued a statement on Tuesday in which it said the effect of the 18-day Israel Defense Forces operation in Gaza has been ‘devastating’ to children living in the coastal territory.

“Children have also experienced serious difficulties in accessing humanitarian aid. The emotional and psychological effects of these events on an entire generation of children will be severe,” the statement reads.

The statement calls on Israel to adhere to previously-signed international agreements and avoid “the targeting of children in situations of armed conflict and direct attacks on objects protected under international law, including places that generally have a significant presence of children, such as schools and hospitals.”

The Hamas-run Health Ministry said Tuesday the death toll has risen to 971 in the Gaza fighting, among those 400 women and children, a figure that has not been confirmed by outside sources.

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon headed to the Middle East on Tuesday to step up diplomatic efforts to get Israel and Hamas to adhere to a UN cease-fire resolution in the Gaza Strip and allow humanitarian aid into the coastal territory.

“My message is simple, direct, and to the point: the fighting must stop. To both sides, I say: Just stop now,” Ban told reporters before his departure.

“Too many people have died. There has been too much civilian suffering. Too many people, Israelis and Palestinians, live in daily fear of their lives,” he added.

Charity brings U.S. viewers Israel’s version of the war in Gaza

Jewish star of davidA Jewish charity in the United States has launched a television advertising campaign meant to show America viewers the Israeli perspective on its operation in the Gaza Strip. Israel’s Foreign Ministry has already launched worldwide public relations campaign intended to glean support for Operation Cast Lead.

Bookmark and Share

The Chicago-based International Fellowship of Christians and Jews (IFCJ) is now financing 60-second ads to show Israeli children running toward bomb shelters as rockets strike the western Negev. The ad spots also show the wreckage left behind by the rockets.

Each television spot also features a telephone number which viewers can call in order to donate money to improving anti-rocket fortifications in southern Israel.

The IFCJ, which was founded by American Rabbi Yehiel Eckstein, also produces a series of public relations programs which are being aired on local television stations in the United States.

The IFCJ stated this week that the campaign has so far raised around $1 million dollars for the fortifications, a project it says will continue after the war in Gaza ends.

The IFCJ raises around $85 million per year. As opposed to other Jewish philanthropic organizations, the IFCJ relies on small donations from a large pool of donors, the majority of which are not Jewish.

Egypt offer doesn’t meet our demands – Hamas

Palestinian Hamas MilitantsA senior Hamas official said Tuesday that an Egyptian proposal for a cease-fire between Israel and the Gaza Strip was unacceptable in its current form, as it still does not meet the group’s demands.

Bookmark and Share

The Egyptian initiative calls for a temporary truce, followed by a long ceasefire and the opening of border crossings with the presence of the Palestinian Authority of President Mahmoud Abbas, whose forces Hamas drove out of Gaza in 2007. The third phase of the initiative deals with efforts to reconcile Hamas and Abbas’s Fatah group.

Hamas official Moussa Abu Marzouq told Al-Jazeera television on Tuesday any cease-fire proposal must address the group’s demands for an Israeli withdrawal of its forces from the Gaza Strip and a complete opening of border crossings.

“This initiative, if it is to be accepted, will be on the basis set by the movement from the beginning,” he said.

“I believe this track will be the launch point for the acceptance of any initiative, Egyptian or otherwise,” by Hamas, Abu Marzouq added.

A Hamas delegation is in Cairo to relay the group’s position to Egyptian intelligence officials.

Hamas envoys resumed talks in Cairo with Egyptian intelligence officials on an Egyptian truce proposal for the embattled Gaza Strip, according to officials in Cairo. The talks follow diplomatic efforts that have made little concrete progress in reconciling key differences between Israel and Hamas.

Al-Arabia television reported that Hamas has asked for the exact dates of the proposed Israel Defense Forces withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and the reopening of the border crossings.

Earlier Tuesday, the London-based Arabic daily Al-HayatHamas sources have said that the Palestinian militant organization would agree to the deployment of Turkish troops along Gaza’s border with Egypt.

“We trust Turkey and its role as an Islamic country,” the Hamas officials said. They were referring to a proposal recently submitted to Hamas’ Damascus-based political chief Khaled Meshal by Turkish officials.

565 rockets, 200 mortar shells fired at Israel since start of Gaza op

Hamas launching qassam rocketsPalestinian militants in the Gaza Strip have fired some 565 rockets and 200 mortar shells at southern Israel since the Israel Defense Forces launched its offensive on the Hamas-ruled coastal territory on December 27, the Shin Bet announced on Tuesday.

According to the Shin Bet investigation, some 530 of the rockets were fired within the first 16 days of the operation. The Shin Bet estimated that another 35 were fired over the course of Monday and Tuesday, but did not include those numbers in its latest report.

Bookmark and Share

The report does not detail how many were long-range Katyushas, but various sources estimates they number about 10 percent of the total number of rockets fired.

Some 5,700 rockets and another 4,000 mortar shells have been launched at Israel since the beginning of 2005, the Shin Bet said. Of those, more than 2,000 rockets and 1,600 shells were fired in 2008.

During the six-month truce between Israel and Gaza which ended in December, some 361 rockets and 303 mortar shells were launched at Israel. This marks an average of a rocket and a mortar shell a day over the course of the cease-fire period.

Since the firing began in the year 2000, 19 people were killed by rockets and another 18 by mortar shells.

Some 1,272 people have been wounded by rockets and shells since the beginning of the war on Gaza 18 days ago.

The Israel Defense Forces said Sunday that there has been a dramatic drop in the ability of Hamas to launch rockets at Israel. The launches have dropped by 50 percent compared with the first day of Operation Cast Lead, 17 days ago.
