Israeli society more cruel than ever

Israeli flagDespite the heavy blow dealt to Hamas by the IDF, the improvement of the security situation in the South and the lower-than-expected number of casualties during combat, something very bad happened to Israeli society during the 22-day offensive in Gaza – dubbed Operation Cast Lead.

On the ethical and moral front, the war in Gaza exposed the many weaknesses of Israeli society. 650 innocent Palestinians, including 220 children, were killed and no one spoke up.

If the murders in the Sabra and Shatila camps during the Lebanon War brought hundreds of people to demonstrate in Israel’s city squares and induced shock and disgust within Israeli society, decades later when a similar number of innocent Palestinians have been killed, no one protested and no one took to the squares. Everyone was too busy being washed away in the wave of patriotism that overtook the country.

The purpose of Zionism

Jewish star of david“Yes, Dov. Yes, yes. Here is the purpose of Zionism: that we may be forgotten. That there will be no lovers of Jews and no haters of Jews in the world. No anti-Semites and no philo-Semites. That we may be just an ordinary nation, without lovers, without haters. That we may be, in short, a nation in its own land.

“That is why we came here, Dov. Do not let the wasteland and the enemies worry you. The diseases and the ravages. The conflicts and the desperation. That is the labor of Zionism and this is its reward – that we may be an ordinary people, living in its land, forgotten.”

Gaza victims vows to be suicide bomber

Palestinian childrenTwo days after their last soldiers returned from Gaza, Israelis are asking increasingly whether the offensive had achieved anything other than spawning a new generation of potential suicide bombers.

The three-week war enjoyed massive popular support at the time but, with the guns silent, scathing criticism is emerging from the Left and the Right of Israel’s political divide.

The stated goal of Operation Cast Lead was to end Hamas’s constant rocket fire on southern Israel and weaken the Islamists’ grip on the territory. It has failed to achieve either. Hamas kept up its barrage of rockets to the very end of the campaign and has won new recruits for its cause.

Israel admits using white phosphorous in attacks on Gaza

White phosphorous munitionAfter weeks of denying that it used white phosphorus in the heavily populated Gaza Strip, Israel finally admitted yesterday that the weapon was deployed in its offensive.

The army’s use of white phosphorus – which makes a distinctive shellburst of dozens of smoke trails – was reported first by The Times on January 5, when it was strenuously denied by the army. Now, in the face of mounting evidence and international outcry, Israel has been forced to backtrack on that initial denial. “Yes, phosphorus was used but not in any illegal manner,” Yigal Palmor, a Foreign Ministry spokesman, told The Times. “Some practices could be illegal but we are going into that. The IDF (Israel Defence Forces) is holding an investigation concerning one specific incident.”

The war crimes accusation against Israel

War crimes IsraelEvery time Israel seeks to defend its civilians against terrorist attacks, it is accused of war crimes by various United Nations agencies, hard left academics and some in the media. It is a totally phony charge concocted as part of Hamas’ strategy – supported by many on the hard left – to delegitimize and demonize the Jewish state. Israel is the only democracy in the world ever accused of war crimes when it fights a defensive war to protect its civilians. This is remarkable, especially in light of the fact that Israel has killed far fewer civilians than any other country in the world that has faced comparable threats.

Searching for an Afghan Strategy

TalebanPresident Barack Obama is expected to send more troops, trainers, and resources to Afghanistan, a mission long overshadowed by the larger, more robust U.S. deployment in Iraq. Yet beyond relatively vague plans to draw down forces in one war and increase them by thirty thousand in another–bringing to roughly sixty thousand the number of U.S. forces in Afghanistan–some analysts say Obama’s overarching strategy remains something of a mystery. “They are picking up after a period in which the Bush administration was very ambitious in rhetoric and not at all ambitious in resource,” CFR Senior Fellow Daniel Markey tells CFR.org. “And now, the question is, how do they intend to square that?”
