Sri Lanka rejects U.N. allegations on civilian deaths

Sri LankaSri Lanka’s government rejected on Saturday U.N. allegations that soldiers had killed more than 2,800 civilians as unsubstantiated and based on sources allied with the Tamil Tiger separatist rebels.

Colombo’s angry reaction came after U.N. High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay said on Friday that both sides may have committed war crimes, and soldiers had shelled no-fire zones and areas packed with thousands of civilians.

Vital clinic in LTTE held territory could close

Sri Lanka Tamil childrenThe last major medical facility in LTTE held territory has almost stopped functioning due to a medicine shortage, a Sri Lankan health official says.

Dr T Varatharaja says the closure of the hospital would put the lives of thousands of sick and injured people in the conflict zone at extreme risk.

His warning comes amid increasing international concern for civilians caught in fighting in the north-east.

Sri Lanka’s army is trying to take over rebel strongholds in the area.

Sri Lanka troops kill 18 LTTE rebels

Sri LankaAt least 18 Tamil Tiger rebels have been killed as Sri Lankan troops fought to take remaining guerrilla strongholds in the north-east, officials said.

The defence ministry said troops also rescued nearly 60 civilians trying to flee the fighting in Mullaitivu.

There is no confirmation by the rebels. The clashes came as international concern mounts over civilian deaths in government-designated safe zones.

The UN says both the army and the rebels may have committed war crimes.

UN fears Sri Lanka war crimes

UNActions by Sri Lanka’s government and the Tamil Tiger rebels may amount to war crimes, the United Nations says.

UN High Commissioner of Human Rights Navi Pillay called on the two warring sides to suspend hostilities immediately in the island’s north-east.

Describing the level of civilian deaths as “truly shocking”, she warned it could reach “catastrophic” levels.

The government said it was “very disappointed” at the UN commissioner’s “unprofessional statement”.

Sri Lanka captures medical base

Sri LankaSri Lankan troops have captured the last remaining medical facility held by Tamil Tiger rebels in the north, the army’s military spokesman has said.

Brig Udaya Nanayakkara said that the Tiger’s makeshift hospital near Puthukkudiyiruppu was captured during heavy fighting on Wednesday.

The army says it has now confined the rebels to a 37 sq km (15 sq mile) area in the north-east.

Sri Lanka armySri Lankan troops killed the head of the Tamil Tigers’ vast international financing network and 16 other fighters, and captured a hospital in the last town the separatist guerrillas hold, the military said on Thursday.

Sri Lanka’s military has encircled the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in a mere 37 sq km (15 sq miles) of the island nation’s northeastern coast and is fighting to deal a death blow to a civil war that has raged off and on since 1983.

Hundreds more flee as Sri Lanka fighting

Sri Lanka Tamil childrenNearly 400 people fled Sri Lanka’s shrinking war zone and a wounded cabinet minister regained consciousness after a suicide bombing blamed on the cornered Tamil Tiger rebels, officials said Wednesday.

Sri Lanka’s military has encircled the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in a mere 37 sq km (15 sq miles) on the island nation’s northeastern coast and is fighting to finish a separatist war that has raged off and on since 1983.

Troops killed 16 LTTE fighters in battles Tuesday and Wednesday, military spokesman Brigadier Udaya Nanayakkara said.

Heavy fighting in north Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka armyThere has been further heavy fighting in the north-east of Sri Lanka, the military and sources close to Tamil Tiger rebels say.

The army says that in the latest clashes it has killed a senior rebel leader, Sabaratnam Selvathurai.

The pro-rebel TamilNet website says more than 50 soldiers were killed in the clashes and army artillery seized.

Sri Lanka suicide bomb kills 14

Sri LankaAt least 14 people have been killed in a suicide bomb attack in southern Sri Lanka, police say.

The telecoms minister was among about 35 people injured in the blast at the town of Akuressa, 160km (100 miles) south of the capital, Colombo.

Government officials were attending a function at a mosque to celebrate an Islamic holiday at the time.

Sri Lanka fighting surges as 180 LTTE rebels die

Sri Lanka armySri Lankan soldiers killed at least 180 elite Tamil Tiger fighters carrying out waves of counterattacks, and the pace of refugees fleeing the tiny war zone picked up speed, the military said on Monday.

Heavy combat erupted over the weekend, suggesting the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) were mounting a desperate defense against a military onslaught that has confined them to 45 sq km (17 sq mile) in the Indian Ocean island’s northeast.

Since Saturday, the LTTE’s elite Charles Anthony Brigade and Radha Regiment have attempted to punch through the army’s frontline, the military said.
