India answers Mumbai 26/11 questions

India PakistanIndia says it has replied to 30 questions asked by Pakistan in relation to November’s attacks in Mumbai which killed more than 170 people.

Delhi says it now expects Islamabad to make progress in its investigation into the attacks.

The Indian home minister said he wanted Pakistan to apprehend and prosecute quickly all those responsible for the attacks, or hand them over to India.

Pakistan’s high commissioner to India received the answers in Delhi.

Shahid Malik said that they would be “helpful to us in carrying forward the investigations that are underway”.

In January the Indian government sent Pakistan a dossier which it said “unmistakably” pointed to elements in Pakistan being behind the attacks in Mumbai.

Pakistan responded in February, for the first time admitting that the strikes were partly planned on its soil, but also asking 30 specific questions relating to the Indian evidence.

“It’s a very comprehensive document, it answers every question,” Indian Home Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram told reporters.

“We expect Pakistan to take the investigation forward quickly, apprehend all the culprits and hand them over to India for prosecution and punishment or prosecute and punish them in Pakistan,” he said.

“Anyone who’s serious about investigating the origins of the Mumbai attacks will find there’s enough material to take the investigation forward,” Mr Chidambaram said.

According to Indian investigators, the banned Pakistan-based Islamist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) trained and equipped the 10 militants and financed and directed the operation.

Relations between Pakistan and India have worsened since the attacks in Mumbai.

Speaking in parliament last month, Mr Mukherjee made it clear that while Pakistan’s response was welcome, the pressure on it would continue.

“The Mumbai attacks were a crime committed on India, the conspiracy for which was hatched, planned and organised in Pakistan,” Mr Mukherjee said.

He said that Mumbai was by no means the first or only attack on India “linked to the infrastructure of terrorism in Pakistan”.

Pakistan has said the suspects it has arrested will be prosecuted there.
